Creating connection in telecommunications upgrade project with a $29,000 grant from Jackson®

LANSING, Mich. — After learning their copper phone lines would be discontinued in December 2021, the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan (RMHMM) applied for a Jackson Community Grant to fund a phone and family communications upgrade project.

Jackson National Life Insurance Company (Jackson) awarded RMHMM $29,000 to support their upgrade to an internet-enabled telecommunications system. This change will help the House meet higher guest satisfaction goals, as families will now be able to make calls to their network of support systems across the United States, Canada and Mexico in addition to local numbers. The upgrade will also reduce IT equipment and service costs, saving RMHMM over $6,620 annually.

“Our phones are a critical method of communication for families and staff to stay connected to the hospital 24 hours a day,” said Carolyn Hurst, executive director of RMHMM. “We often serve low-income families who may not have access to personal cell phones. This grant will ensure guests can make calls to their support systems as they navigate the life-altering impact of caring for a hospitalized child.”

The new phone system will be put into place by Dec. 31. The upgrade will not only continue to provide phone access for all guests at the House, but will ensure families are still able to be easily reached by medical professionals. Guests at the House often must be at their child’s hospital bedside in mere minutes, and Jackson’s grant ensures that capability will not be disrupted.

“At Jackson, helping others is what our business is all about,” said Kirstyn Waldron, corporate philanthropy manager at Jackson. “We’re committed to contributing to the social and economic well-being of our community, with a particular focus on organizations and programs dedicated to supporting strong families.”
